Fragile Angels is still collecting signtures to take to 10 Downing St to keep the pressure on the govement to make the changes in the NHS for safe heart surgery for babies and children.

There are currently 268 signatures.

It has been brought to my attention through a phone call last month with Paul Larkin of the DOH that real time audits are ONLY in place for heart transplants surgery and NOT in place for small units carrying out children's heart surgery. This poses a very dangerous situation and explains how four babies died at the John Radcliffe hospital last year. Real time audits would have raised warning signs. The number of operations that are collated audited and analyzed i.e. life and death out comes, which are in place at the moment are 10 to 12 months old I was told and they are no early warning system in place let alone safeguard against multiple deaths which. Real time audits can clearly warn of. these operations in all units which are already failing, and do not have real time audits in place there is no safety net in place if one child dies it is understandable these children and babies are very sick and can have complication but when two, three, four babies die and no warming investigation has been altered this is totally unacceptable and makes the consent form which parent sign for their children operations worthless.

Dr Stephen Bolsin the anaesthetist at Bristol hospital for children heart surgery who raised the alarm to the countless deaths in the 1990's, he was requested to collect audits over three years by the UBHT. He advised that hand held palm pilots (hand held computers) would be the best way forward for real time audits to be collected to safe guard another Bristol scandal from happening again. There are a number of babies born with multiply heart problems which place them in higher mortality group, these childrens’ audits should be collected separately so that the surgeon and the hospital don’t fear taking on the higher risk operations.

The audits this situation is totally unacceptable and is of a small cost to the NHS to put in place. Centres of excellence for heart surgery is the only way forward to maintain the highest standards of heart operations for babies and children. Please sign this petition to keep the pressure on the Department of Health and the government to make these changes before even more life is lost.
